My name is Sydney Rastatter and I am 11 years old and living in Santa Cruz, California. I am in 5th grade at Rio del Mar Elementary School. We were named a Blue Ribbon School and my prinicipal and assistant principal got to go meet and have lunch with George W. Bush in the White House just because we were named a Blue Ribbon School. I also want to say congratulations! If I was old enough and if it was allowed, I would vote for you 100 times. With you as the President of the United States, I believe that we can make a change and get through these bad economic times, together. I really hope that the war will end soon; but I am also concerned that it will not stop. All of the soldiers deserve to be at home with their family and friends rather than off fighting in Iraq.

One thing that I think needs to change is on the topic of education. The governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in my opinion is wrong about cutting funds from schools. I thought that kids wee the future; if so, aren’t we supposed to make sure that the future is the best it can be? All in all, California’s schools need your help.

My 5th grade class stopped in the middle of our spelling test to watch and listen to your Inaugural speech. You are a very powerful speaker and 5th graders listen to you when you use words like next generation, peace, today challenges, and courage. The thing I liked best about your Inaugural speech was when you said, “Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America.” It showed me that you really do care about changing the ways of America, right now.

When you were officially elected President of the United States of America, I felt that we were on our way to the ‘Promise Land’ as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said. We still have a long way to go but because of you, we are now one step closer. Now, before I bid my final adieu, I would like to ask you a couple of questions. Are you really going to add a basketball gym to the White House? What type of dog are you getting for your children? I hope you will write back to me, soon.

Sincerely,
Sydney Rastatter

PRESIDENT BARACK
OBAMA

Dear Mr. President,
I’ve written this letter today to congratulate you on how tremendously great you’ve done in the presidential race. First let me introduce myself, my name is Jackson O’Boy, I’m ten years old and a big fan of yours. I live in Aptos, California and go to Rio Del Mar Elementary School. I feel extremely honored to serve as a citizen of this country with such a fantastic new leader. I believe you will help us out of these hard times. My hopes for our countries are that we can end the war in Iraq, and rebuild our economy so that Americans have the opportunities in the future to fulfill their dreams of living prosperous and stable lives. I hope you will standby your goals of rebuilding our energy resources so that we can be freed from our alliance on foreign oil. I pray that my generation has as much as my parents and grandparents have had. I believe investing in the education of science and mathematics will be very important for my generation succeed. Please invest in helping us. I am so proud of our country for overcoming its racial barriers and electing an African American President of the United States. I concluded that I have dreams of my own for this world. For example, I hope that the homeless will have a roof over their head, that all over the world there would be no discrimination, and also that we can save our environment and stop global warming! I can only imagine what our world would be like if these dreams could come true.
My first dream for the world is to not have discrimination. For instance, in places such as Watsonville, there are strawberry pickers from Mexico; they are forced to take these jobs because they have come to California illegally. This is discrimination because they are not allowed to become U.S. citizens and get legal jobs. The parents who work in the fields have to also send most of the money they earn back to Mexico to support their families. One solution would be to build homes near the fields so that the workers would have a permanent place to live. This would allow the parents to bring their families to Watsonville and have affordable housing. The workers could then apply to be U.S. citizens because they would have jobs. As you can see, not having discrimination is one step closer to having a changed world.
Next, I hope that we can save our environment and stop global warming. The green house gasses are destroying our ozone layer and creating global warming. One of the causes for global warming is cars, because the gasses that come out of cars are being released into the environment. An effect from global warming is some of the animals. Many species of animals are becoming endangered, soon if global warming doesn’t end, some of those species may become extinct. One way that we can put an end to global warming is to save energy. For example, instead of driving everywhere, walk or ride your bike to some places. Also, when you’re in a room, turn off the light, or, when you have trash, throw it away in a garbage can, not on the ground. In conclusion, our earth could change and be a cleaner and happier place if we would just save energy.
My final expectation for the world is for the homeless to have a roof over their head. One big problem in our world is that many people who are homeless are forced to live outside. Some live underneath bridges, freeways, or behind buses. Others have to live in shelters away from their families, or search day and night for enough food. A solution might be to let the homeless stay somewhere with their families and not have to search for food. This way, they could stay warm and sleep inside. As a result, many people all over the world would be happier. As you can see, homelessness is a big problem almost everywhere.

“To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.” By Anatole France.

Wrapping things up, we all have hopes or dreams for the world.

The End.

LAND GRANT LETTERS

Dear Government Official,
My name is Ana Briones Perez, and I am sending a letter requesting a land grant for 50 acres of land in Monterey, California. My husband's name is Miguel and my nine childrens'names are Sophia, Pablo, Maria, Jose, Gabriella, Juan, Victor, Ivan and Victoria. We are bringing eight pigs, two horses, five cows, and seven sheep. My family can make very warm and comfortable wool coats and has experience trading goods.

We need a place to keep all our animals and kids so our family decided that Monterey would be perfect, fertile soil and ocean..two in one! Enclosed in this letter is a diseno, which contains exactly where in Monterey we would like to live. Thank you kindly for your time.

Sincerely,
Ana Briones Perez (Kate-O)

June 9, 1842
Dear Government Official,

My Name is Rockel Pizzara and I'm writing you this letter to request a land grant. My husband is Sebastian Pizzaro. We have 12 children. We want 193 acres of land and we want to live in the mountains. For livestock, we have 4 chickens, 80 horses, 96 polar bears, and 6,000 penguins. Our livestock can make food so we can eat and trade. We want 18 rooms in our house and want it to be 20 feet wide by 8 feet wide and 9 feet tall. Make sure that it has lots of snow, too. We also want it to have apple, orange, banana, and cherry trees. We can make our economy grow by selling and trading food that we make. We've trained our livestock to make food so that we can sell and trade, too. We can also cut the fur off some of our animals for fur to sell, too. We have sent a diseño with the letter. As you can see in the diseño, it has plenty of room for a river, livestock, trees, and a house, that could be built because we want it to be 193 acres. We want to request this land grant because our house was burned down in a fire in Mexico City where we used to live. It is important to us because we are very, very poor and we need a place to live, livestock and things to eat. We would really appreciate it if you gave us this house.

Sincerely,
Rockel Pizzaro

Dear Governor,
My name is Pablo. I have two children, one is thirteen and one is eleven. My wife's name is Lucy, you might know her, she's the owner of Lucy's Groceries. Well, back to the subject. I would like this land to be about one hundred acres. I have seven chickens, four goats, and I would like to get an additional fifty head of cattle. This could help our local economy because I would be able to offer my customers a better product at better prices. I would also need to hire four ranch hands and a butcher which will bring new jobs to our community. Thanks for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Pablo Gotez

Holiday Poetry

C heerful faces
H appy lives
R ejoicing families
I nviting
S nowy days
T insel on trees
M any children on sleds
A merry Christmas to all
S anta Claus is coming to town

By Rachel

DIAMANTES
Darynator
*************Santa Claus***************
*********Broad in beam hairy***********
***flying, whipping the dear working***
***presents, sleigh, top hat, carrot***
******dancing, playing, melting *******
***************Frosty******************

Jericho Joshua
*************present***************
******remarkable, enjoyable*********
***surprising, striking, amusing*****
**holiday, celebration, crystal slush**
*****flinging, freezing, slinging****
***********icy, frosty*************
***********snowball***************

Kate-O
*************Santa***************
**********obese, jolly**********
***delivering, giving, smiling*****
**saint, fellow, season, new year**
*****sledding, throwing, eating****
***********snowy, chilly*************
**************Winter***************

Graham Cracker
*********Christmas Tree*********
*******flammable, spiritual********
***sparkling, shining, air-giving***
***custom, plant, Noel, new year****
*****sledding, throwing, eating****
*********snowy, happy*************
***********Christmas**************

Nick Nick
A Poem for Mr. Sweet
My teacher inspires me to do my best
And often puts me to the test
My teacher encourages me to read
And seem to know just what I need
So that I may truly succeed
A wish for you and your family
Of Christmas cheer...filled with blessings and
Hope this holiday season to bring you all near

Beautiful Nicole! Pablo and Juanita are next-door neighbors, along with being best friends. The problem is that the pecan tree between their houses got split in half in a terrible lightening storm. Pablo then felt bad for Juanita so he collected some pecans in a bucket and put them on her doorstep. But when he came back, there was a bucket filled with pecans from Juanita on his doorstep,

Juanita and Pablo did not care for themselves, but for each other. This shows that they have a strong friendship. Juanita probably knew that Pablo liked to make pecan pie with his mother. So, when the tree split, Juanita must have gathered up pecans to give to Pablo so his mother could make a pie. This shows that Juanita wanted Pablo to be happy.

As you can see, Pablo and Juanita cared about each other very much. It must have taken a lot of courage for Pablo to give away his pecans to Juanita. This story shows how friendship can become stronger through tragedies. Now tell me, would you do the same as Pablo and Juanita? To be continued . . .

Welcome to Room 12 Writer's Blog!

Thanksgiving Writing

Thanksgiving
by Izzy Bizzy
Nov 14, 2007
Throughout your life you may wonder what you are thankful for. Well, here are some of the things I’m thankful for: family, friends, and God. I would like to celebrate these many things during Thanksgiving because they are so special to me. I’ll talk about all the things I’m thankful for.

As you read above, I’m thankful for my family. I can go home to my family when I’ve had a good or bad day. I can tell them all about it and they care. Truthfully, I don’t know what I’d do without my sister, mom, or dad. Another reason I appreciate my family is because we get together during the holidays and have fun together. As you can see, I have a great family!

I’m also thankful for my friends. My friends are very, very nice to me. When I wake up in the morning I feel drowsy. But as soon as I see my friends I feel better. And whenever there is a problem, we talk it out. Sometimes things can get a little out of hand, but my friends and I will always stay together.

Now I’ll tell you about God. God is so much a part of my life because He is the Way, the Truth and the Life. He helps me make make good decisions and do the right thing. I love God a lot. I read the Bible to keep my faith strong. God is a great part of my life.

As you can see, I have a lot to be thankful for. Now that you know some of the things I’m thankful for, can you think of some of the things you are thankful for?

“Gratitude consists of being more aware of what you have than what you haven’t.”
– Unknown Author

A Thankful Holiday By: Jackson Browne

In life you should be thankful for several things. My top three, sports, family, and Aptos are, what I enjoy a lot in life. This Thanksgiving I want to remember the joyful and happy things that happened to me.
I love being able to play sports. You get exercise but at the same time you have fun. Sports is my favorite thing to do with family. Almost every day I ask my dad mom or sister if I can play with them. All in all sports is a great part of my life.
I couldn’t imagine my life without family. They are what make me happy. My family warms my heart up with love and happiness. I don’t imagine where I would be right now if I didn’t have family. We spend time together a lot and we love it. I always look forward to the part of the day when we sit down at the dinner table. In life family is unquestionably the top out of my top three.
Last, but not least, is my town, Aptos. Aptos is the background of my life, and the town that keeps me safe. Although Aptos is a small town all, the wonderful things that are in it, in my opinion it is the biggest town in California. It has fun things, and happy things. Aptos is positively my favorite place to be!
All in all, Thanksgiving should be a joyful and exciting holiday. I hope you will remember the happy and wonderful things that happen in your life, like I am this Thanksgiving.

Being Thankful
By Kellie Bellie

Even though books, sports, school, and life are things I’m thankful for, my family, health, nature, and friends are things I’m most thankful for. This Thanksgiving is a day to remember what your really thankful for and I hope to celebrate these things that are important to me.
First of all, I’m thankful for my family. My family is not just a family, my family is the most loving, most caring family in the world. They love me so much, that they can’t even tell me how much they love me. My mom always makes dinner for my family so that we can survive, but that’s because she loves us. They care about me and do things for me, such as making my bed in the morning and making me breakfast. To show my appreciation, sometimes I do things for my wonderful family. Even though my sister does get really mad at me sometimes, I still love her. Whenever I’m at school I begin to miss my family.
The second thing that I show my appreciation to is nature. Every day I like to look at the green plants and the birds that take wings in the blue, clear sky. I’m so glad that there are animals that are alive in this world. The ocean is another part of nature that I’m thankful for. If we didn’t have the ocean, our world would look boring, not beautiful like it does now.
The third thing I really appreciate is my health. Some people die of horrible diseases. If I wasn’t healthy, I would probably die. My health is so important because I want to live and many other reasons. I’m so lucky that I can survive, because some people don’t have good health. I hope that someday everybody has good health.
In conclusion, the very last thing I’m thankful for are my friends. My friends are so loving. I know that they love me because I am their friend. They care about me and miss me when I’m far away. I am always happy when they come over. That is what a friend really is.
To sum it up, the things that I’m thankful for really mean a lot to me. “If you want to turn your life around, try thankfulness. It will change your life mightily.” Gerald Good

Giving Thanks
By: Kate-O

There are many things in life that I am thankful for. My family, friends, and sports make me happy to be alive. At Thanksgiving, I hope to celebrate these things that are so special to me.

I am very grateful for my big family, when we get together we have so much fun! For Christmas every year, we meet at my grandma and grandpa’s house. Usually, we play a huge game of ultimate frisbee at the beach. My dad is almost always sore afterwards! During the summer, since my grandparents have property at Lake Nacmiento, we go camping. We have a boat and my family and I go water skiing and tubing. All in all, I don’t know what I’d do without my family.

I am so appreciative of my friends. They help cheer me up when I am feeling down. When they are feeling down, I cheer them up too. I love having my friends to encourage me and help me through life.

Sports are very important to me. Having fun, making friends, and exercising are some things I love about sports. Some of my favorite sports to play are softball, soccer, and running. I played in a competitive softball league over the summer, but our team wasn’t very good. This fall I played soccer and scored five goals over the coarse of the season! My mom coaches my running team and we train for a three-mile race in May.

My family, friends, and sports are things in life that make me happy to be alive. Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate life and what we’re thankful for.
